The Mirror: A History

What we see in them depends on what we bring to them.

The Earliest artificial mirrors

The earliest mirrors archaeologists have discovered were found at Çatal Hüyük in Turkey. They date from 6200 BC and were made from polished obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass.

The earliest metal mirrors were found in Iran and date from 4000BC. Mirrors were also popular with ancient Egyptians. Made of copper, then bronze and sometimes gold or silver, mirrors had religious connections as well as used frequently for applying makeup and fixing hair.

Mirrors were connected with the deity Ra, and were considered to be his symbol (the sun), brought to earth. In Egyptian sculpture and painting there is always a round son mirror atop Ra's falcon head. The mirror's elliptical shape imitated the rising or setting sun stretched sideways in the earth's atmosphere.
